Is Judge Judy a Good Name for a Mule? (Asking for a Friend, the Friend Is Me)

Is Judge Judy a Good Name for a Mule? (Asking for a Friend, the Friend Is Me)

Is Judge Judy a good name for a mule? Serious question. Mariah already said no, but I’d like a second opinion.

Apparently yelling “JUDGE JUDY, GET YOUR ASS IN THE BARN” isn’t the peaceful country life she had in mind.

LeeLoo the rescue mini mule stepping off the trailer

The moment she stepped off the trailer. One year old, roughly 400 miles of hard luck behind her, and no idea she’d already won.

So meet baby LeeLoo, our one-year-old mini mule. To the first 19 people who preordered What The F(arm) — your support helped us rescue this little girl from a kill auction and bring her home. Thank you. I hope you look at these pictures and feel a little of what we’re feeling.

I told Mariah I wanted a name that was fun to say and made me smile out loud. LeeLoo comes from one of our favorite movies, The Fifth Element. In this case, the fifth element is love. Although hay is making a strong case based on our monthly expenses.

Mariah walking LeeLoo on her first day at the farm

First walk on her own gravel. She has not been told she’s small. Please don’t tell her.

Giving animals a second chance is what makes Mariah and me happy. Big ones, little ones, apparently ones I’m not allowed to name after daytime television judges.

After I was hit by an Uber driver and couldn’t walk, I remember sitting in that wheelchair thinking I was still lucky. Everything hurt, my life had changed, but I was alive. I’ve carried that with me ever since.

Now I get to walk trails with a little mule who got another chance too, and honestly that’s enough to make me a little emotional.

Michael introducing LeeLoo to Freya and Apollo over the fence

The introduction to Freya and Apollo. Nobody screamed. On this farm, that is a diplomatic triumph.

If you see us out in Ohio, stop and say hello. Ask how we are and don’t be surprised if we both answer “always good.”

When simply being alive is your baseline for happiness, every day is a good day. Some just involve more shit to shovel.

Also: the book is real now

My author’s copy arrived today. Gotta read it over and make one round of minor edits, but wow. Holding What The F(arm) in my hands after living it is pretty surreal. Somehow all this became a book — and people buying that book helped bring LeeLoo home. Still wrapping my head around that.

You can pre-order it right here. Those first 19 people will always be part of her story. Thank you for being part of ours.

P.S. Judge Judy is clearly a better name for a female Saint Bernard anyway. Mariah, please consider this my formal notice.
